The Tallinn Airport is Estonia's largest civil airport. The alternate name for Tallinn is Ulemiste Airport. It is situated on lake Ulemiste's eastern shore, approximately 4 km away from the center of Tallinn. The Tallinn Airport is the national base for Estonian Air. The airport officially began its operations from 20 September 1936. In the year 1970 the runway was lengthened. Since its inception the Tallinn Airport has witnessed remarkable development and plays host to approximately 1.5 million passengers every year.
In the year 2006 a journalist named Argo Ideon proposed that the Tallinn airport should be renamed as Lennart Meri International Airport in the honor of the late Estonian president Lennart Meri. Although this suggestion was given a lot of importance and publicity, the change of name did not take place and the Tallinn airport retained its old name.
