The Kardla Airport is situated on the Hiiumaa island, approximately 7 km east of Kardla. The Kardla Airport was founded in the year 1963. For the first few years after its inception, the Kardla Airport had very active schedules. It had charter flights to Kaunas, Murmansk and Vilnius. Apart from the charter flights it had regular flights to Riga, Tartu, Tallinn, Kuressaare, Haapsalu, Viljandi, Vormsi and Parnu.
However after the independence of Estonia, the Kardla Airport began to suffer losses. But the Kardla Airport began to improve again after Estonia became a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization. Since 1993, Kardla Airport has witnessed remarkable development. The runway of the Kardla Airport was renovated in the year 1998, measuring 30 meters wide and 1520 meters long. Now Kardla Airport is licensed as a civil as well as military airport.

The Kardla Airport celebrates the Annual Flight Day on the first weekend in the month of August. Apart from providing entertainment to the inhabitants of Hiiumaa, the main aim of the celebration is to promote Estonian aviation among tourists and locals. The celebration consists of parachute shows, fun flights and stunt flying. This annual celebration is very popular amongst children and adults alike.
