Vormsi is the fourth biggest island city of Estonia. The name ' Vormsi' had been derived from a Swedish name, ' Ormso' meaning ' Snake Island'. There are influence of Swedish names noticeable in other places of Vormsi. The other places of Vormsi, where the traces of Swedish names are noticeable are, Hullo signifying administrative center, Sviby meaning the main port, Soderby, Norrby, Diby, Ralby, Borrby, Saxby, Rumpo and also on Lake like Prastvik.
Vormsi is situated between Hiiuma and the Mainland area. The city is a municipal one with the synonymity in Laane County.
The birth of the Vormsi city takes us back to 13th century. The Swedes occupied it for long time. Just before the time of World War-II, the population of the city was just a meager 3,000. At the time of the War, nearly most of the people of Vormsi , dwelling in Estonia, were transported back to Sweden. Very few people now living in Vormsi.
The island of Vormsi is located between Noarootsi Peninsula and the Hiiuma Island.
To visit Vormis is not be worried at all. There is a ferry trip to Vormsi via Rohukula and Vivi Harbor takes around 45 minutes.
Vormsi is a city which is always covered with forests and wood. There are meadows, juniper corpses and big boulders. The city has dominance of Swedish migrants. The Swedish populations stay in a 30 small huts which are located in the Rumpo Village.
In the Rumpo village, there are superb tents and swimming pools. On the Western coast of the Rumpo village, we find the Saxby Lighthouse and the Limestone Bank. There is also another village named Hullo village, the famous Swedish Vormsi Church founded in the year 1632 along with old cemetery which is decorated crisscrossed.
Vormsi island is just 93 Square km. The population is not highly to be talked about, just a meager 331. As per the historical beliefs available, we find that there was a time Vormsi was once upon a time a part of three bigger island, the connection between the three islands was made by boats.
