Saaremaa

Saaremaa is the biggest city of Estonia. The location of the city is between Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. To the Southern part of the Gulf, is the Irbe Strait which is just after Sorve Peninsula. Another interesting aspect of the Island is the Kaali Crater. The Island has several forest terrains. Out of them, the important terrain is Juniper. Saaremaa is the important Island city Saare County. This Saare County is also known as Saaremaa or SaareMaakond as per the terminology in Estonian language is concerned. The term ' Saaremmaa' had been derived from a Finnish word named ' Saarenmaa', which indicates land of the island. This name is also known in Sweden and Germany as ' Osel'.

To visit Saaremaa is not at all a difficult task. There are various ways the traveler can visit Saaremaa. It can be reached by ferry via Virtsu and Muhu Islands. Contrarily the traveler might visit by ferry through Soru which is located on the Island of Hiiumaa. Also Saaremaa can be reached by ferry from Ventspils located in Latvia. The services began just couple of years back and is run by a private ferry service company.

The travelers can visit Saaremaa by bus from Talinn, Parnu and Tartu. There are also air services available to travel to Saaremaa. The airstrip is located at Kuressaare. From this destination the traveler can fly to Tallin. There are also air services available to Saaremaa through Latvian Airways via Riga and Kuressaare. The aim is to penetrate at the health and the tourist spots of the Island city. From Kuressaare, there are air services operated to some of the places of Sweden on seasonal basis. The places to where the flights are operated are Stockholm and Parnu of Sweden.

There are various places of interest located in Saaremaa. These are as follows:

  • The Island of Abruka- This place is located on the Southern part of Saaremaa.
  • Angla Windmills- The Windmills is located on the Upa Leisi Road which is located at the 32 km signpost.
  • Anikaitse Bluff- This tourist site is located on Poide, situated on the Eastern coast of Kubassaare Peninsula, which is around 4 Kms South-East of Kubassaare lighthouse.
  • Asva Fortified Settlement

  • Jamaja Church
  • Jarve Beach and Sand Dunes
  • Juhan Sare book Museum
Gradually the city is being developed as tourist paradise. The necessary infrastructure pertaining to the development of tourist paradise is being planned.
