Ruhnu

Ruhnu is an Island city of the Gulf of Riga of Estonia. Traveling to Ruhnu is not at all worrisome. Aim to catch the flights operating on weekly basis from Parnu and Kuressare in winter and summer respectively. There is also ferry service to Ruhnu. There was time when the people of Sweden dominated Ruhnu city. Also to run the Government administration Swedish law implied. This law was implied just prior to the year 1944.

After the year 1944, the Island was occupied by the Soviets. A good number of Estonian citizens was brought in to the Army The Army was thus reorganized. It was in year 1970, Ruhnu was badly attacked by storm. People were shifted to a safer place. Estonia was freed from the clutches of the Soviet dominance in the year 1991. The properties of different buildings, lands and others were returned to the genuine owners to establish their own credentials. Pertaining to the ownership of different properties of Ruhnu is concerned; nearly a lion's share of the residents of Ruhnu became domiciled in Sweden. As most of them did not evince any interest about the properties in Ruhnu, still some visits the city as a part of emotional gesture.

As per the city regarding the origination of the city of Ruhnu is concerned, it takes us back to nearly 5000 BC. It was on basis of our belief that around that time the first Scandinavian people started arriving in Ruhnu. Still the historians are still not confident about the exact settlement about the Swedish community in Ruhnu. Another group of historians have succeeded in drawing up a conclusion that around 1341, Swedish started arriving and settling at Ruhnu.

Ruhnu was dominated by the Kingdom of Sweden( 1621-1708) and later on by the Russians till World War-1. Germany occupied Ruhnu for couple of years. It was around 1919, Ruhnu became a part of Estonia. Still Ruhnu has not included as a part of European Union.
