Piirissaar

Part of the Tartu County, Piirissaar is the largest lake in the Lake Peipus in Estonia. A reasonably small island of more than 7 km in area, it is a place full of natural beauty and exceptional landscapes. A part of the land is marshy and is just above the sea level while bigger parts are full of willow, alder and birch. The flora and fauna here makes it an exceptional destination. The small number of inhabitants staying here carries on their living through fishing and onion growing. No wonder, the lifestyle of people is primitive and modern wonders of science and civilization have negligible traces here. People live in close proximity to each others and are conservative and superstitious. Piiri, Tooni and Saare comprise the main island with Pirri being the major attraction in the islands of Piirissaar. With a unique history encompassing nations and civilizations, Piirissaar is a delight for the lovers of nature. An immaculate ambiance far from the hustle and bustle of city life, Piirissaar offers some of the most exciting and invigorating aspects of wildlife and water body. A boat trip on a bigger boat from Tartu reaches this place in about one hour and twenty minutes covering a distance of 65 km. One can also take a fishing boat from the harbor of Laaksaare to reach here. The weather in the winters is chilly and not recommended for the tourists and often the area is flooded. In spite of the natural bottlenecks and lack of developments, Piirissaar is one of the finest places in this part of the world to visit, explore, love and simply enjoy.
