Abruka is an island belonging to the Republic of Estonia, Nothern Europe. Situated in the Baltic Sea, Abruka is in Kaarma commune of the Saaremaa County. Measuring just 8.78 km², it has just about 40 inhabitants currently. Originally the island was started by the bishop Saare-Lääne in the middle ages. Since the 18th century the population grew to a maximum recorded 150 people. Abruka is reachable by boat from Saaremaa's Roomassaare harbor and takes just about 40 minutes. Kuressaare airport is situated on Saaremaa and is opened for local and international flights so Abruka is actually quite accessible for travel lovers. The four kilometer rite is pleasant and romantic. Some of the surrounding island neighbors are Vahase, Kassilaid and Linnusitamaa (which means "bird shit land" in Estonian).
Even on such a small area, Abruka actually has two lighthouses, botanical and zoological reserve, cemetery, and camping spot with a playground. Of the two lighthouses on Abruka, one is constructed of girders, and the other of concrete. Both were built at the beginning of the 20th century. The cemetery is dedicated for the tragic shipwreck of M/S Estonia on September 28, 1994. It is not the usual tourist place but if one is looking for a nice quiet place to relax then this island is an ideal place. Swings are a prominent feature and local entertainments like open air concerts are quite a common sight.
If one wants to do some sight seeing then the Saaremaa has many places of interest like the Kuressaare Episcopal Castle, Saaremaa museum, The Town Hall, The Weighhouse and The Aavik`s museum. The most important is the Kuressaare Episcopal Castle. Built in the 14th century, it is one of the best surviving medieval castles in the Baltic Sea. Its square shape of 43 meters is quite interesting and is built of chiseled dolomite blocks. The Weighthouse is built at the central square and serves as a market place.
