Saaremaa is the largest island of Estonia. It is located in the Baltic Sea, south of Hiiumaa island and belonging to the west of Estonian archipelago. The capital of Saaremaa is Kuressaare. Saaremaa is the mainland of Saare country. The island forms the main barrier between the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. There have been plans to connect Saaremaa to the mainland either by bridge or tunnel. The Latvian airline Air Baltic has launched a direct flight to Saaremaa. The flight is directed mostly at health and spa sport. This has given rise to a number of a number of hotels in Saaremaa.
The majority of the people of the country work in agriculture, the main branches of whivh are dairy farming and meat production. Fishing and fish processing are gradually becoming important. The island has an old tradition in boat-building. Today, both wooden and plastic boats are manufactured. Tourism is gaining importance these days and is gradually developing into a major industry for the near future. This has given rise to a number of hotels in Saaremaa. The hotels are all provided with a number of facilities and amenities. Although the facilities offered by these hotels cannot be compared to five star luxury but they offer its guests some facilities that are required in a cold country such as fireplace.
